Corpus Linguistics, Critical Discourse Analysis
Michael is associate professor at TWCU with an academic background in English literature, English language teaching, information technology, and applied linguistics. He researches in the fields of critical discourse analysis, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, and quantitative and qualitative corpus linguistics. His CoJET corpus, consisting of more than 2.3 million tokens, is compiled from third-level Japanese English language textbooks. He has presented locally and internationally on building a pilot corpus and neoliberal discourse in ELT textbooks, and he is the current program chair of JALT Global Issues in Language Education SIG. Promoting the idea that 21st century English is an acultural language which is simply the language of whoever speaks it, he has published on developing study skills and strategies using a task-based approach.
